Pat Williams – The 7 Musts of Leadership

By James A. Donovan • May 11th, 2017

In this Blog we share with you a summary of the 7 Musts of Leadership from a recent talk given by Pat

  • Vision – If you want to accomplish any goal in life you must first have a vision of what you want to do.  Mr. Williams noted that several U.S. Presidents had a clear vision of where they wanted our country to go in the future.  And, he mentioned how Jesus had his vision for those who wanted to be his followers.

  • Communication – You must communicate your vision in a clear, concise, consistent and compelling manner; otherwise nobody is going to hear your message.  In today’s Internet age, there are so many ways to get your message out.  However, nothing works better than communicating face to face.

  • People Skills –  How many times have you felt that your boss lacked people skills?  Like, instead of greeting you with a warm welcome to your office for the day, he skips a warm welcome and starts barking orders for the day.  People want to feel appreciated and treated with respect not like a robot.

  • Character Counts. The key to good character is: honesty; integrity; responsibility; and humility.  It’s a constant struggle to live out this saint like qualities.  The key is persistence.

  • Competence – You need to have a combination of training, skills, experience and knowledge to perform your tasks as assigned.  Who wants to be taken to an Emergency Room and not have a competent ER Doctor?

  • Boldness – Leaders make tough and often bold decisions.  Remember in May 1961 before a special joint session of Congress President Kennedy said one of his goals was to send an American safely to the moon before the end of the decade.  So many thought he was crazy to even think this was possible.  Now we have films of our Astronauts walking on the moon.

  • A Serving Heart – In short, it’s not about me, it’s about you.  The needs of others come before your own.   It’s hard to believe that in such a wealthy country like ours, there are so many homeless.  Almost daily there are news stories about people leading the homeless to shelters and soup kitchens.

In fundraising we always talk about the importance of having leadership for the fundraising campaigns.  What’s best is if these leaders are people others can’t say “no” to.  In every community there are a few key leaders who, if on your campaign committee, can use their clout and connections to bring in the cash for your campaign.  Be sure to identify and enlist them.

In closing I would like to share with you one of my long time favorite quotes on leadership from the Ancient Chinese Philosopher, Lao Tzu who said:

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say, we did ourselves.”
